Guided tour of the areas surrounding Lake Trasimeno

The Lake Trasimeno area

Lake Trasimeno at the green heart of Umbria

The islands and the most picturesque villages

The guided tour of Lake Trasimeno organized by Cortona Tourist Guide offers beautiful scenic views of its shimmering water where a number of different wild animals such as ducks, cormorants, kites and kingfishers like to crowd. Lake Trasimeno, a real natural paradise surrounded by an amphitheater of smooth hills, is the biggest lake in Central Italy and is remembered in history for the violent and tragic Battle of Lake Trasimene fought in 217 B. C. between the Roman army and the Carthaginians under Hannibal.

There are several picturesque villages fronting onto Lake Trasimeno. The most important one, Castiglione del Lago, is perched on the top of a promontory where the imposing tower of the castle named Rocca del Leone stands out, followed by Passignano sul Trasimeno, which is still today encircled by medieval city walls and is the departure point of ferries to Isola Maggiore, one of the three islands of Lake Trasimeno, together with Isola Polvese and Isola Minore.

Obviously in the Lake Trasimene area there's no shortage of exquisite food made with fresh lake fish... and goose!
